Grant aid is not available from the Financial Aid Office for summer expenses; however, summer grant funding may be available through other departments and programs such as Dean's Fund for Study Abroad and Student Activities Funding Engine (SAFE).
If you receive Princeton need-based aid during the academic year, you may contact our office to request a subsidized Princeton student loan for approved summer programs. For Princeton programs, you may borrow up to the cost of the program, less any other funding already provided. For non-Princeton programs that have been approved for course credit, you may borrow up to the cost of tuition and mandatory fees. Housing, food, and other expenses will not be considered for the amount of the loan. Loans are not available for non-academic programs such as internships or volunteer programs.
You can submit the Princeton Loan Request Form (select the "summer" option) through the My Financial Aid portal to request a loan. Non-Princeton programs also need to submit a copy of the signed course approval and a copy of the summer tuition bill or documentation of tuition.
The summer loan will be disbursed to your Student Account. If attending a Princeton program, the loan will apply toward University charges. If enrolled in a non-Princeton program, and your account doesn't have an outstanding balance, the loan will create a credit that you can request to receive as a refund. It is then your responsibility to pay the host institution. Please see the Princeton Loan Request Form or the Student Loans webpage for the terms of the subsidized Princeton student loan for the current year.
