What is the international student scholarship tax?

For Non-US tax residents, the University is required to withhold taxes on grant aid in excess of tuition each term. If you are a Non-US tax resident and your aid exceeds the cost of tuition, a tax charge will be posted to your student account each semester. You will also be required to file a U.S. Non-Resident income tax return each year and may be eligible for a partial or full refund of taxes collected.

Types of Aid

The financial aid offer may include aid from a variety of sources. Since Princeton meets 100% of need, receipt of additional funding sources may impact the financial aid offer. Outside sources such as scholarship, veteran's benefits, and employee tuition benefits should be reported on the PFAA each year they are received.

Financing Options

Since 2001, grants have been used to meet need in the Princeton financial aid offer for all aid recipients.

As a Princeton student, you are not required or expected to borrow to meet your demonstrated financial need.

Financial Literacy

Develop skills for life beyond Princeton.

More than ever, a basic understanding of finances is an important part of life. As our financial environments shift and you are presented with many spending, banking, and credit options, it will be important to make informed decisions.

We encourage you to visit the Financial Literacy Initiative website for the most up-to-date programming and financial resources, including including links to various resources, tips, and recordings of previous workshops.

How Aid Works

Our need-based aid program is designed to make Princeton accessible to students across all socioeconomic backgrounds. Using Princeton’s generous financial aid formula, counselors carefully review your aid application to determine your family’s expected contribution and financial need.

Because of our commitment to supporting an economically diverse student body, we will meet 100 percent of your demonstrated financial need. Our no-loan policy ensures that need is met through grants, rather than loans.
